Meet Michelle Smith, she is the creator of the blog the Whole Smiths.  

Michelle believes that wellness begins with real food and not the processed food-like products that we’ve come to accept as food.  She focuses on removing the lower quality products that are damaging our bodies and replacing them with more nutrient dense foods that make our bodies happy.  Most of her recipes follow paleo guidelines, but not all.  While she agrees that as a society we’ve come to rely too much on sugar and grains in our diets, you may see some sugar, grains and high quality dairy sprinkled sporadically through her recipes.  But they won’t be the dominate player in any recipe.  Michelle's emphasis is on minimally processed and sustainable foods that are easy to prepare, taste great, and make us feel good.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself?  

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area with my two little girls (4 & 6) and my husband. Once I had my children I started my mission in trying to figure out what types of foods we should be eating that would best serve our bodies. After reading about various types of diets, I realized the best thing we could be fueling ourselves with is unprocessed natural foods. Beyond that I learned that I didn’t process grains very well and decided to start my blog, the Whole Smiths, where I share real food recipes that the whole family can enjoy.


Q: How did you get involved in cooking?  

Living in San Francisco during my 20’s, I was surrounded by delicious food. Knowing I couldn’t afford to be eating out every night, I taught myself to cook and began making delicious food at home on a budget my 23 year old self could afford.


Q: Describe your cooking style?

The closest description to my cooking would be “paleo” however that term isn’t my favorite and I feel is misunderstood. I favor using clean, nutrient dense foods that make my body and gut happy.

Q: How did you learn about grass-fed meats?

Even before we began focusing on changing our diets, my husband has been a fan of grass-fed meats so that’s something that we’ve always tried to incorporate into our diets.


Q: What is your favorite recipe featuring grass-fed meat?

It has to be a good ‘ol fashioned burger. I love that you have them at an everyday BBQ or dress them up with the best of ingredients. And because I can’t have a bun with it, I feel like I can taste the meat even more!


Q: You’re stranded on a desert island; luckily you’re stranded with your top 5 ingredients and must-have kitchen tool.  What are they?

Grass-fed butter, coconuts (they’re so versatile!), kombucha, ground beef and potatoes. I’d bring along my high powered blender as well so I can turn anything I find into a smoothie.


Q: What is the best cooking secret, tip, or piece of advice you’ve learned?

Hands down, use a meat thermometer! It takes the guessing out of creating the perfect piece of protein and ensures a perfect piece every time.
